Dedicated server - Web Hosting Primer

A dedicated server is where a client gets the exclusive use of a machine for hosting purposes. Under shared hosting, there are many users hosted on a single server and there are limits predefined much on access to resources on the server. A dedicated server has no limits and allows more flexibility and control.

Even among dedicated servers, there are options for less or more control. It may be fully or partially managed by the client. Functions can be divided between the client and the hosting company. Taking into consideration all possible arrangements, still offer many more options in what concerns software and scripts, access to the root, the restart and selection/adjustments in the OS.

With regard to the operating system, it may be open source as in a free variant of UNIX or Linux. It may also be a Windows server license or a version of Linux for business with the support. That which is most appropriate depends on the size and the nature of the requirements of accommodation and the type of server. A small business prefer rightly do not pass on the operating system, all in a large or medium scale business to high traffic and security issues might prefer a more secure OS.

Dedicated servers can be classified into two basic types - managed and unmanaged. There is a large gap between them, where the distribution of responsibilities vary from host to host, depending on the type of hosting Linux. Most of the time, the client has superuser with root access and can install or modify the scripts and software. The hosting company will be such as to not take care of the OS.

With fully managed servers, the hosting company will take care of the administration. The client was simply to use the available content management tools and resources and to operate the site. Servers not managed, on the other hand, give full responsibility of the user for any administration.

In summary, the benefits of dedicated servers include increased control, access and flexibility to use or modify tools, software and server settings. With no other user share server, all the server resources are available to the user. This not only makes the operation more secure and powerful, it also offers the possibility to better manage the growth of operations in line and the wave of traffic, sudden and use.
